What is a Pannier Market?

Pannier Markets are small scale markets for local and independent producers and retailers to sell goods. In a previous era, they were places where people brought baskets (‘panniers’ in French) of goods to sell. The new Granary Wharf Pannier Market in Leeds is designed to attract small scale, independent traders and to be a city centre location for original and alternative goods.

What can I sell at Granary Wharf Pannier Market?

Almost anything so long as it is legal! However, we are specifically looking for original and independent occasional or one-off retailers. So if you are a specialist food producer, a designer, retro-fashion retailer, designer-maker or have  distinctive and original products we are particularly interested in differentiating Granary Wharf  Pannier Market from other markets in the city and for making this a regular monthly event in Leeds to be held the last Saturday of every month. Remember this is a Pannier Market, in years gone by people only brought what they could carry in a basket – so there is no vehicle unloading on the square and all your goods have to be carried or wheeled onto the square from our unloading area. We provide the stalls and we hope to provide some covered alternative selling space if our wonderful weather were to let us down.

How much will it cost to have a stall at the Granary Wharf Pannier Market?

We know that it takes time to develop a market and so prices for stalls at Granary Wharf Pannier Market will start  low from £15 a pitch. Parking is available on site if you want to leave your vehicle close by or alternatively there are four car-parks within 10 minutes walk of Granary Wharf. If it rains we will be providing some alternative sheltered selling areas during 2010 to ensure that the day is not a complete washout .

Marketing and promotion

We will be putting a lot of effort and resources into letting people know about Granary Wharf Pannier Market – it’s a completely new concept for Leeds and the north of England so we expect lots of interest. With one of the busiest stations in the UK next door, many thousands of residential apartments, all of the attractions of Leeds city centre and the city’s newest hotel (Leeds City Inn) and a micro-brewery (The Hop) and restaurants such as Wasabi Tepyanaki all located at Granary Wharf, we expect to build up a loyal audience for Granary Wharf Pannier Market – but part of that will depend on our vendors bringing interesting and unusual goods for sale.

Can I book a space in advance?

We are looking for occasional vendors as well as professionals and welcome a wide variety of goods.  However, we will select products and services that best suit the location and our potential customer base. So tell us what you want to sell, when you want to come and if the mix is right we will reserve you a pitch.

Contact Toby Hyam or Paul Fallon for more information on 0113 394 4302

We provide 1 6ft x 2.5ft trestle stall and a single chair. If you require additional tables or stands, these can be brought by prior arrangement. No vehicles can be taken onto the square so unloading is around 150 metres from the market area. Please bring a trolley or some helpers if your goods are heavy or bulky.

The Granary Wharf Pannier Market dates for 2010 are the last Saturday of every month.: 24th April, 29th May, 26th June, 31st July, 28th August.
